Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Halesowen, West Midlands
Sector: Engineering / Manufacturing

We are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering and manufacturing business specialising in cooling and beverage dispensing equipment.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer with strong mechanical design skills who enjoys improving existing products, resolving technical challenges and supporting new product development. You will play a key role in maintaining engineering documentation, enhancing product reliability and quality, and ensuring designs are optimised for efficient manufacture and assembly.

Key Responsibilities of the Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Create, maintain and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), product data and engineering documentation within an MRP system.
  • Manage engineering changes, including updates to designs, technical drawings and product specifications.
  • Develop and improve mechanical, refrigeration, electrical and dispensing system components and apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles to improve product quality, reliability and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, cost reduction and enhanced product performance.
  • Support new product introduction, redesign projects and product improvement programmes and assist with prototype builds, product testing, sample development and design verification.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality teams to resolve production issues and optimise processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Ensure designs and engineering documentation meet relevant regulatory, quality and safety standards.

Skills & Experience of the Mechanical Design Engineer

Essential:

  • A Level 4 NVQ, HNC or equivalent engineering qualification, or substantial relevant industry experience.
  • Relevant experience in an engineering discipline, such as mechanical design, development, sustaining engineering or continuous improvement.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally using Creo.
  • Experience creating and maintaining Bills of Materials within an MRP system.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
  • Ability to produce accurate technical documentation and manage engineering changes.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate tasks across multiple teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of refrigeration components and systems, including compressors, evaporators and heat exchangers.
  • Understanding of beverage dispensing systems, including pumps, valves, carbonation and flow control.
  • Familiarity with relevant product compliance standards, including CE, UKCA, UL, NSF and RoHS.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), FMEA and structured design reviews, and exposure to Lean, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.

The Ideal Candidate

You will be a proactive, analytical and detail-oriented engineer who takes ownership of projects and enjoys working collaboratively across engineering and manufacturing teams. You will be comfortable balancing multiple priorities, solving practical technical problems and identifying opportunities to improve products and processes.

This role will suit someone who combines hands-on engineering capability with strong documentation and product development skills.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary up to £38,000
  • Ongoing professional development and opportunities for progression
  • Supportive, innovative environment with one of Europe’s leading manufactures and suppliers in the industry
